No. 34, Ganzhou Street, Yanping Li, Datong District, Taipei City 103

Opened in 1954, this super popular old-school shop is on Ganzhou Street in Datong District, Taipei.

The first generation started with a stall on the red-brick sidewalk at the corner of Ganzhou Street and Liangzhou Street, and got famous for their handmade mi tai mu. Back then, people would just hold a bowl of mi tai mu bing and eat it standing by the road — a really special, nostalgic street scene in Dadaocheng.

Now the third generation runs it. About ten years ago they moved off the street into a real shop with retro red-brick wallpaper, so you still get that eating-on-the-street feeling.

Mi tai mu bing is a traditional Taiwanese shaved ice for beating the summer heat — chewy, with a light rice flavor and brown sugar sweetness.

The noodles are short and uneven, thinner at the ends and thicker in the middle, and milky white and a little see-through. They’re smooth and soft at first, then bouncy with a slight crunch as you chew. On their own they taste lightly of rice, but mixed with the crushed ice and the old-school brown sugar syrup (sweet but not too sweet), it’s cold, refreshing, and full of layers.

It started as a snack for farmers in old Taiwan and Hakka villages — one bowl after working in the fields gave you energy and cooled you down. Toppings like fen guo, xian cao, red beans, or taro are common, and it’s a classic nostalgic summer treat.

The shop has a strong old-school juan cun vibe. The red retro door and all the celebrity signatures on the walls make it feel super nostalgic — and it’s turned into a popular photo spot too.
